Houston Council Member Robinson Annouces Sidewalk Summit

Houston Council Member David Robinson, At-Large Position 3 plans to hold a Sidewalk Summit this Fall. To further our work as chair and vice chair of the City of Houston’s Transportation, Technology, and Infrastructure Committee, we will be hosting a Houston Sidewalk Summit this September 2021. The Sidewalk Summit will encompass a week of events to help amplify the role of the pedestrian and assert that safe and well-maintained sidewalks are a critical component of Houston’s transportation network.

To be held at Emancipation Park Community Center, the goal of this event is to bring stakeholders and community leaders together for a candid discussion of current sidewalk regulations, municipal policies, and critical investments being made in Houston, as well as to discuss new ideas for addressing the city’s sidewalk challenges and improving the overall pedestrian experience. City of Houston departments and local partner organizations will highlight the important role that sidewalks play in improving walkability.

Massive I-45 Houston Project Heads Back to Public Comment Phase During Pause

June 30, 2021 - Hemmed between a request for a pause by federal highway officials and an outcry from opponents, planners of a massive rebuild of Interstate 45 in Houston are taking their plans back to the public in what may be a last effort to keep the project on pace. The Texas Transportation Commission on Wednesday said more public scrutiny is needed of the plan for remaking I-45 north from downtown Houston to Beltway 8. “Basically, let’s take this project and put it back out for public comment … then we will see where we go from there,” Commission Chairman J. Bruce Bugg said.

87th Session of the Texas Legislature Passes Senate Bill 1055 Affirming Right-of-Way to a Pedestrian

This 87th session, the Texas legislature and Governor Greg Abbott finally took action to make Texas safer for all of us when we aren’t protected by the metal, impact zones, and seatbelts of a car or truck. The Lisa Torry Smith Act, SB 1055, was carried through the House and Senate by Representative Ron Reynolds and Senator Joan Huffman, and signed into law by Governor Abbot on Friday, June 18th. The new regulations will take effect this coming September 1st, a momentous shift in Texas public policy and the rules of the road.

The law does two things, which will be in effect across the State of Texas on September 1, 2021. First, it makes it a crime in Texas to operate a motor vehicle in a way that injures someone who is legally using a crosswalk, whether they be a pedestrian, or using a bicycle, motor-assisted scooter, electronic personal assistive mobility device, neighborhood electric vehicle, or golf cart. Second, SB 1055 includes the Stop for Pedestrians bill, which was originally filed as HB 443 by Representative Celia Israel and proposed by Farm&City, and was added to bill as an amendment by House Transportation Chair Terry Canales.
