Support for transportation alternatives

Demand is rising for safe and affordable travel options

More than ever, residents of our region are demanding safe and affordable travel choices:

  • Rising fuel costs force many people to seek new ways to work, school, and errands
  • Rising fuel costs also force many businesses to seek new ways to ship goods
  • Many young people and seniors need safe alternatives to driving
  • More than 100,000 households in Harris County have no car

But necessary infrastructure is lacking

In addition to private automobiles, we need more and better transportation options. But:

  • Many neighborhoods lack any safe place to walk
  • Many roadways are unsafe for bicycling
  • Many communities are underserved by public transit
  • Many freight rail lines are underbuilt and over capacity

Transportation agencies must invest in alternatives

The public investments we make today determine the transportation options we will have tomorrow. We believe that all of our transportation agencies must invest in infrastructure to provide excellent access to neighborhoods, jobs, and other destinations. Roadways can be designed to accommodate all users including pedestrians, bicyclists and persons with disabilities. Railways can be modernized to better move both passengers and freight.

You can help!

Working together, we can ensure that our governments invest in the transportation alternatives we need. Here are several ways you can help:

  • Urge your organization(s) to formally adopt the CTC resolution (73 kb pdf)
  • Invite CTC to present to your group. Please email advocacy@ctchouston.org to request a speaker
  • Write to your elected officials. Tell your local, county, and state representatives that you support investment in all transportation modes.
