The Remains of the Day Pass

The same day I took the bus to work, the bus and train to the opening of the (amazing) Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues installation at the Rice Gallery and the train home, the METRO board decided I was getting an unfair deal and voted to eliminate the day pass. Never mind that my “extra” trip was home on a uncrowded train (the 6:00 pm trip, as usual, was standing room-only); never mind that being able to ride to the gallery was what made me take transit that day; never mind that I was doing exactly what METRO ought to be trying to encourage; never mind that 28 of the top 30 transit systems in the U.S. offer period passes. I’ve gone through my arguments for passes before. It’s a big step backwards, carried out in a week so the public didn’t have time to respond. And, unless somebody who carries more weight steps up, it’s a done deal.
